How to Create Your Own Ginger Bug

Do you like fizzy carbonated drinks?

Are you trying to give up sodas, and wish there was a healthier alternative?
Do you like ginger ale or kombucha?
Then getting a ginger bug started is for you!

What’s a ginger bug, you ask?
It’s a wild ferment starter similar to sourdough, in that it doesn’t require packaged yeast because it’s basically getting it naturally from the environment it is in.

It’s incredibly easy! Way simpler than any other ferment starter I’ve got currently. And once you get it going, it is REALLY low maintenance and no-drama.

Using a ginger bug you can make your own homemade REAL ginger ale, and virtually any other probiotic-filled fermented sodas from home! So cool right?!

⬇️ SO here’s what you need! ⬇️

✨1 Tablespoon organic fresh ginger unpeeled, grated or chopped into small pieces
✨1 teaspoon raw sugar
✨1 cup filtered water unchlorinated

Mix these together in a glass jar and cover with a coffee filter and rubber band. Keep in a cool dry place on your counter.

Every day you will feed it like with a sourdough starter.
To feed: add 1 tsp sugar, and 1 tsp ginger. With a little bit of water too. (This part doesn’t matter too much, you can just eyeball it. A few tablespoons is fine.) Stir and cover again.

Repeat for a week and it’s ready to use in a soda or tonic recipe!

Would you try this? If you’re nervous about fermentation and starting projects like kombucha/sourdough/kefir, I’m tellin’ ya, THIS is the one to begin with. So simple and easy.

This is your sign. You can do it!
